Sustainability at Manila Water

 Sustainable Development Framework

Our corporate vision is to be a leader in the provision of water, used water and other environmental services which will empower people, protect the environment and enhance sustainable development. This embodies the approach that the company takes to sustainability.

SR Framework

Manila Water developed a sustainability framework that operates from the inside-out, beginning with caring for and developing its employees who are at the forefront of the company’s work. Through its water service that provides access to potable water and sanitation facilities, Manila Water helps build communities and protects people’s health. Realizing that the business depends on a secure water supply, Manila Water seeks to protect the environment throughout all phases of its operations. Manila Water’s business also boosts local and national economies.

The company’s programs for water provision to the poor, water education, and environmental protection are aligned with the goals and priorities of the Medium-Term Philippine Development Plan and the programs and initiatives of the international development agenda, particularly the Millennium Development Goals.

 Sustainability Policy

The Sustainability Policy, developed through the assistance of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), was first presented in Manila Water’s maiden Sustainability Report released in 2005. Over the years, several changes in the organization and business environment prompted the company to revisit the policy and identify gaps that need to be addressed.

Given the new international standards and principles such as the ISO 26000 guidance on social responsibility, creating shared value and inclusive business model, Manila Water improved its Sustainability Policy to align it with the ISO 26000 guidance, the Ayala Group’s new Sustainability Policy, and Manila Water’s Corporate Core Values and existing policies on Corporate Governance and Health and Safety, among others.

 Climate Change Policy

In 2007, Manila Water became the first company in the Philippines to have a formal, Board-ratified Climate Change Policy. The company’s Climate Change Policy predates the national climate change policy, including the Philippine Climate Change Act, the National Framework Strategy on Climate Change and the National Climate Change Action Plan, which were approved in July 2009, April 2010 and August 2011, respectively.

To better align its Climate Change Policy with the government’s anchor strategy of adaptation, Manila Water revised its policy in 2013 to prioritize initiatives in enhancing climate resilience of assets and operations rather than minimizing carbon footprint due to the country’s vulnerability to climate change patterns.
